Ania Hamitouche
Description
Objective: To understand how the position of the sun affects shadows and to introduce the concept of solar time. Place a lump of playdough in the center of the plate. Stick a straw vertically into the playdough—this acts as the gnomon of the sundial. On a sunny day, we will place the plate outside where it will receive unobstructed sunlight. We will use the marker to mark the shadow’s position at the start of the hour, and label it with the time. We will check back every 15 min to mark and label the shadow’s position. Observe how the shadow moves around the plate. Educational Takeaway: This experiment teaches children about the Earth’s rotation, how it affects the position of shadows, and the concept of telling time using the sun.

JSE Math Enrichment
by
Mathnasium
Description
Mathnasium is your neighborhood math-only learning center dedicated to providing children with the strong math foundations they need to succeed in school and in life. At Mathnasium, we're committed to offering students of all grade levels and all skill levels a comprehensive, customized learning journey in mathematics. The journey begins with an in-depth assessment to pinpoint the unique learning gaps they may have encountered in the prior academic year and to determine the areas they can be accelerated. This crucial step helps us understand each student's individual needs, setting the stage for the personalized educational experience that follows. Central to our approach is the development of a customized learning plan for each student, drawn from our proprietary curriculum, which is expansive yet flexible. This curriculum not only aligns with national standards but is also adaptable to cater to each student's specific learning requirements and the educational goals they're striving for. Our skilled tutors are dedicated to guiding students through this customized plan with one-on-one support, offering detailed explanations, practical problem-solving, and in-depth exploration of concepts. Throughout the semester, we maintain a dynamic learning process, continuously monitoring each student's progress and making necessary adjustments to their learning plans. This ensures that the instruction remains relevant, challenging, and effective, addressing each learner's evolving needs. The semester concludes with a thorough post-assessment, which serves as a comparative tool to showcase the student's growth, achievements, and areas that may require continued focus. This reflective evaluation is instrumental in demonstrating how the customized learning plan, paired with our robust curriculum and dedicated instruction, has contributed to the student's improved mathematical proficiency. It also ensures that each Mathnasium student is well-prepared and confident to embrace the mathematical challenges of their forthcoming grade level ● First session will involve a written assessment and a Math based activity. The details of the assessment will be emailed to the parents If the student is significantly behind, we will recommend them to attend an additional session per week at our center in Village Oaks Shopping Center ● Every student will be given an individualized learning plan (based on the assessment) and will work on it with Mathnasium trained instructors. ● A typical session after that will involve the following: - 50 mins of Mathnasium curriculum - 10 mins of Math activity, spin the wheel, awarding of stars and prize redemption ● Mathnasium has an integrated rewards program and the stars / cards earned in these classes can be redeemed for prizes ● Last session will test the student’s learning from all previous sessions. True masters will win the treasure!
