Description
PLEASE NOTE: First graders will or will not be admitted after review and successful completion of some coding quizzes. Coding requires grit and stamina, and is too difficult for first graders. This class will have a full STEM focus. Students will be given several choices during this 9 week coding session, and the choices are fluid - they can work on one thing one week, and switch when/if they feel like. We will work through Science and Math lessons in Legends of Learning, explore physics principles of science through Minecraft.edu, play math games through Prodigy and Tivitz, and of course learn to CODE! We will be in the Media Center using laptop computers. Headphones will be required. As usual, we will have computer coding lessons (javascript, blockly, and python) through Code.org, Google’s CS First, Code Combat, CoSpaces, Kodable, and Tynker. In addition, students can work on their critical thinking skills through online play, and several students have enjoyed working with presentation software such as Prezi, Powerpoint, or Adobe. Please be sure to talk with your student about what they are interested in doing during our coding STEM club time.

About the provider
Certified K-6 Teacher Delivering Creative Lessons All Students
I am a dedicated elementary teacher who has a proven track record of successfully teaching grades 1-6, with a passion for IB education and a commitment to optimizing individual student and whole school success. I am currently a teacher at a magnet school in Tampa. At my current school, I am the workshop facilitator for Code.org and CS Fundamentals. I am a huge advocate for improving technology in our classrooms and am the recipient of grants in excess of $30,000 to help improve technology. In addition to my work in helping students discover the power of computer science, I have served on our school's committees and task forces focused on curriculum development, textbook review, writing curriculum and training in all subject areas. I was twice honored as Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year. I create a welcoming learning experience for all students and have taught general education students, gifted students and individuals with learning challenges within a mainstreamed, inclusive classroom. I care deeply about my students and as my current principal says, “..... Her dedication to education is evident in her work, and she’s always willing to “go the extra mile” in the fulfilling of her duties.... She has built a large repertoire of strategies to address student learning and outcomes...”
