DescriptionWelcome to "Curiosity Collective: A writer in the making," a creative after-school program designed for children in grades 2-5. In this class, we believe that writing is a superpower 🦸, and every child is a natural storyteller. Our goal is to transform the fear of the blank page into a love for creative expression by exploring writing in new and exciting ways.
This program is not just about grammar and spelling; it’s about nurturing the imagination and giving children the tools to become confident, thoughtful communicators. We achieve this by integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) and SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) into every lesson, demonstrating that writing is a skill that connects to everything we do.
What is the Curiosity Collective?
Our curriculum is built on the principle that curiosity is the starting point for all great writing. Each project is designed to spark a child's natural wonder and turn it into a compelling narrative. We explore different forms of writing, including:
Prose & Storytelling: We teach the fundamentals of narrative, from crafting unique characters and building engaging plots to creating vivid scenes.
Poetry: Students experiment with rhythm, sound, and descriptive language to write poems inspired by the world around them.
Journaling: We encourage self-reflection and observation, helping children express their thoughts and feelings in a personal and meaningful way.
How We Integrate STEAM and SEL
The most unique aspect of our program is its interdisciplinary approach. We show children that writing is a key component of STEAM fields.
STEAM Integration: We use scientific and mathematical concepts as springboards for creativity. For example, a lesson might involve writing a story based on the life cycle of a butterfly (biology), or creating a story where a character uses geometric shapes to navigate a map (math & art). We believe that the logical thinking required in STEM and the creative problem-solving in the arts are two sides of the same coin.
SEL Integration: Writing is a powerful tool for emotional development. Our projects are carefully designed to build critical social-emotional skills:
Self-Awareness: Children explore their own feelings and interests as they create characters and stories.
Empathy & Social Awareness: They learn to step into another's shoes by writing from different perspectives, whether it's a fictional character or a natural element.
Self-Management & Resilience: They practice perseverance as they work through the writing process, from brainstorming to drafting and refining their work.
Relationship Skills: They learn to listen, share, and give respectful feedback in a supportive classroom community.
In the Curiosity Collective, we celebrate every writer and every idea. Our goal is to empower your child to become a lifelong learner, a compassionate observer, and a confident voice in their world.
