Description
This is more than just an after-school club—it’s an academy-style introduction to the world of strings, designed to give students a solid foundation in violin and viola playing while cultivating a lifelong love of music. Through a carefully sequenced, year-long curriculum based on Suzuki-style pedagogy and playful, hands-on music-making, students will learn: Proper instrument set-up and posture Fundamental bowing and fingering techniques Basic note reading and rhythm skills Ensemble listening and teamwork Our goal is to provide an extraordinary first experience with strings—one that feels both joyful and intentional. Class sizes are kept small to ensure each child receives individual attention and support. Commitment & Expectations While lessons are engaging and fun, progress depends on consistent practice outside of class. Students will receive weekly take-home assignments and are expected to spend time during the week practicing skills and exercises learned in class. Parents play a key role in encouraging and supporting this home practice. If you’re unsure whether your child can commit to this level of involvement, please feel free to contact me directly at linlinghsu@smes.org with any questions. Materials & Instrument A one-time materials fee of $60 will cover printed music, a method book, practice resources, and other classroom materials. Students will need their own violin or viola (rentals available locally; details provided upon registration). Cancellation Policy This is a full-year program (September–May). Because continuity is critical to musical progress, and because spaces are limited, please register only if you are committed for the year. However, we recognize that circumstances can change. Withdrawal before the second class: full refund (minus materials fee if already provided). Withdrawal within the first month: prorated tuition refund (materials fee non-refundable). No refunds after the first month, except for documented medical issues or family relocation. We are committed to creating a program where every student can thrive—and with steady attendance, home support, and consistent practice, your child will be amazed at what they can accomplish in one year of violin and viola!

About the provider
Extension Programs at St. Margaret's Episcopal School; where after-school is more than an after-thought.
St. Margaret’s Episcopal School is a vibrant, diverse community committed to educating the hearts and minds of young people for lives of learning, leadership, and service. Through our Extension Programs, after-school hours become a time for personal growth, exploration, and connection. Extension Programs offer engaging activities—like enrichment classes and clubs, the Dance Conservatory, Parent Night Out events, and more—designed to help students discover new interests, build friendships across grade levels, and develop confidence beyond the standard school day. From science experiments and technology projects to the arts, athletics, and creative challenges, our programs nurture the whole child in a supportive environment. Guided by our core values of character, community, balance, equity and inclusion, and high expectations, Extension Programs empower students to learn, lead, and thrive. Our dedicated team believes every child should have opportunities to take risks, try something new, and grow independently and collaboratively. St. Margaret’s Extension Programs are open to current SMES students in KG through Grade 8, supervised by caring staff who value safety, creativity, and the joy of learning.
