DescriptionThe West Laboratory School after school chorus program is made up of 1st through 8th grade students who love to sing. The chorus will meet on Fridays from 3:10pm-4:10pm. Students will develop beginning and intermediate vocal technique and skills, notational literacy and fluency, expressive and stylistic interpretation, and an appreciation of music from around the world and throughout history. A performance will serve as a culmination of the students' work during each session. The West Lab after school chorus will be led by Cristina Morales, a first-year Ph.D. student in Music Education at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Prior to starting her studies at Frost, Cristina taught middle and high school for 14 years in Palm Beach County and continues to work with K-12 choral programs in the Miami area.

Moreover, students will learn the basics of making music: understanding the difference between rhythm and melody, tuning the Ukulele, instrumental breaks, and when to accompany with singing. A crucial component will be musical games and activities; this class component is still being researched and developed. The idea is to draw from successful music education curriculums, like Orph training or similar, to make learning fun and increase material retention by the students. Ultimately, students will learn to play the Ukulele and express basic ideas in musical terms while instilling music appreciation.
