Description
In this course students will learn to have fun with words, make connections, strengthen their concept of identity, and build community. Students will learn to appreciate written and spoken language. Students will learn how to connect the things happening in their lives, their communities, and the world to each other. Students will learn to articulate their thoughts and opinions on the page and out loud. Students will learn to foster community within the classroom and beyond. Poetry club is held weekly after school in the designated space. A workshop typically contains games, discussion, a writing lesson followed by sharing. Students will have an end of the semester slam poetry competition alongside other participating Pacifica elementary and middle schools with smaller performance opportunities in between. Students will also have a chance to publish their work in SPARC’s annual poetry anthology.
